It has taken me some time but here's a short story about my time in Taiwan for all the people I haven’t told about it yet.
On Saturday the 21st of July I took a plane from Sydney to Taipei. This
meant of course that I had to say goodbye to Peter and Paula who had
(once again) been kind enough to let me stay at their place during my
time in Sydney. During the few days I had in Sydney Peter and Paula
helped me to take care of some things like getting my vaccinations for
Asia and sending a package home. I also got to see Lindsay, Jacquie,
Isabella, Alec and Joanne again. And I got to meet even more relatives

Donna, David and their kids from Sydney.
The flight to Taipei took about 9 hours and when I arrived at the
airport the lady at the tourist information desk informed me that there
were no vacancies at any of the hostels in the city. Fortunately for me
the oldest hostel in town was willing to help me out. So I ended up
spending my first night in Asia on the couch in the hostel’s TV-room.
The next morning I found another (cheaper and cleaner) hostel and moved
my stuff there. I spent 4 days in Taipei and in that time I used the
metro (or MRT/subway/underground/tube, depending on where you’re from)
to visit just about every corner of the city. The most impressive
attractions were Taipei 101 (at 503 meters the tallest building in the
world), the night markets (where you can taste a snake), the “Lungshan”
temple, “Fort San Domingo” (an old fort built by the Dutch East India
Company) and the National Palace Museum. The view from the Taipei 101
observation deck was incredible and I’m very glad that I got to visit
it after I missed out on it in September last year. The museum was also
very impressive. It was full of ancient calligraphy, jade, porcelain
and bronze. Unfortunately I was not allowed to take any photographs.
While I was in Taipei I met some very cool people (Aki from Japan and
Won from Korea) and we explored the city and the museum together. I
also met a Canadian guy called Sherwin who told me about Angkor Wat in
Cambodia and gave me some useful tips for when I get there.
Wednesday it was time to take the bus to the airport and fly to Hong Kong, but that’s another story.
